1. What does dimming a light mean?

Dimming light means lowering the brightness of a light source from its normal setting to a more subtle or lower setting.

Dimming your lights can be helpful in many different situations from giving your eyes a break from staring at a bright light all day to creating a softer ambiance in a room.

2. How to dim Incandescent bulbs?

What is an incandescent bulb?

An incandescent light bulb is a source of electric light that emits light as a result of heating the filament. A wide range of sizes, wattages, and voltages are available.

Are incandescent bulbs dimmable?

Yes, incandescent bulbs are dimmable, since incandescent bulbs have a resistive behavior, allowing lumen output to be directly proportional to current.

Can I use an LED dimmer switch with incandescent bulbs?

Yes, incandescent bulbs are compatible with any dimmer switch. Currents of electricity flow through a wire filament in an incandescent bulb, causing the filament to glow and the bulb to illuminate. These bulbs, however, may burn out if the voltage is too high.

3. How to dim non-dimmable LED lights?

Can you dim non-dimmable LED lights?

The short answer is that you can’t dim non-dimmable LED lights. In a dimmer circuit, non-dimmable lights will either flicker or run at full brightness.

What if I dim a non-dimmable bulb?

It wouldn’t dim. The light would switch between “on” and “off”. Occasionally you’re going to notice some on/off flashing in the middle.

4. How to dim dimmable LED lights with a dimmer switch?

The best way to dim the LED lights is to install a smart dimmer switch. You can control your light either using the wall switch or the smartphone app.

How to install the smart dimmer switch?

1.     Remove the old switch

Ensure that the power is off before removing your old switch

2.     Check for neutral wires

In the junction box, you will find a bundle of white wires folded up and secured with a wire nut. This is your neutral wiring and it is required for using Smart Switch. Almost every home built since 1978 has a neutral wire.

What is a neutral wire?

By using a neutral wire, you can power the smart switch while also cutting power to the lighting circuit connected to your lights.

3.     Connect the wires

Remove all the wires from the old switch and connect them to the corresponding wires on the new Smart Dimmer

What is the best color temperature for lighting?

There is no one-size-fits-all answer to this question, as the best color temperature depends on your individual preferences and lighting needs.

Best color temperature for a bedroom

As an example, the ideal color temperature for your bedroom might be warmer colors (2700K/3000K) in the evening and cooler colors (3500K/4000K) in the morning.

Best color temperature for a living room

The best color temperature for a living room is generally around 3000 Kelvin. This temperature is warm and comfortable, and it will make the room feel inviting to spend time in.

If you want to add a little bit of warmth to your living room, try setting the temperature to 2700 Kelvin. This temperature is still comfortable, but it will give the room a slightly warmer feel.

If you want to cool down your living room slightly, try setting the temperature to 3500 Kelvin. This temperature is perfect if you want to create a more relaxing atmosphere.

Best color temperature for a kitchen

The 5000K color temperature is ideal for kitchens with white cabinets and a modern to the transitional aesthetic.

In general, 4000K starts to take on a warmer tone and can “pink out” white cabinets.

If your kitchen has dark wood cabinets, a 3000K light would be optimal.

9. Endnote

Replacing old bulbs with smart bulbs is the easiest way to dim your lights. They can be installed almost anywhere to be easily incorporated into any home decor.
